Preble Street assumed operations of New Life House on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from Penobscot Community Health Center (PCHC). In fall 2023, PCHC had announced that due to financial considerations, it would close New Life House – its low-barrier 56-bed emergency shelter in Bangor – in fall 2024 unless another provider could take over operations. New Life House Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, provides services to adults with developmental disabilities exclusively in their own homes or apartments — regardless of how complex their disabilities may be.

Individual and group counseling, support groups, and family therapy for adult and child survivors. Following best practices, New Life House does not offer counseling with the abusive individual. Strengths-based, client centered, and trauma-informed goal setting, resource referrals, and service linkages that emphasize housing, health, and self-sufficiency. 24-hour crisis hotline support; onsite safe shelter and offsite hotel placement; basic necessities; crisis intervention and support; and life skills groups. She felt shamed and scared, and she was struggling with preeclampsia and migraines as she got closer to her due date. Eventually, Alejandra got connected to New Life House through clinic staff at the office where she went to get ultrasounds. At first, she was nervous about what her family would say, but in January of 2022, Alejandra became a New Life House Mom and has loved it ever since. Initially, many parents and family members of the over 120 people New Life House supports were, too. Their children had aged out of Hampton Roads’ special education system, and were ready for adult services and support. Many worried that cognitive limitations, medical challenges, behavioral issues, or other conditions, such as autism, would make it impossible for their loved ones to live safely in their own apartments. Since 2003, New Life House Colorado has transformed the lives of teen moms and their children across the Denver-metro area. Our vision is to transform the lives of teen moms and their children. On a daily basis, we are changing people’s lives, restoring families, and providing hope.

New Life House programs that include Professional Case Management so families receive a hand up not a handout. Since becoming a New Life House Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through New Life House Staff. She attended the GED graduation in May 2022 and gave the graduation speech. Janely, Alejandra’s 9-month-old-daughter, is also enrolled in the Early Learning Program. At first, Alejandra said, “I was hesitant because of bad experiences I had with babysitters for Janely, but I got to meet the staff and they’re really nice and I’m never far away from Janely which is really great”.
At Contra Costa New Life House, we provide crisis treatment in a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing a mental health emergency. We believe recovery starts from within, and that our job is to do whatever it takes to provide the support needed on your recovery journey. The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems. She feels safe and is excited to provide an environment for Julian that is supportive and caring, two things she longed for as a child. She is drawing every day to practice her skills while raising her lively, talkative and energetic little boy. Fatima heard about New Life House through a friend of a friend, and after having joined the program, she quickly began working on her high school equivalency through Penn Foster.
Empowering Teen Moms
Established in 1990 out of the need for homeless services for women and children, New Life House serves over 5000 homeless and impoverished individuals and families in Hancock County each year. In addition, New Life House serves as the Front Door for rental housing assistance in Hancock County. Stephanie grew up in generational poverty, became a mom as a teenager and dropped out of school. She was sleeping with her baby girl on a couch in a crowded mobile home. She has a scholarship and is attending Metro State University of Denver where she is working toward an RN degree. She lives downtown with her son and works part-time while attending college full-time.
She also completed our Parenting, Healthy Relationships, and Financial Literacy classes – as well as an internship at Head Start. “For the first time in my life, I feel stable and stress free. And I couldn’t have gotten here without New Life House to get me started,” says Brittani. Sleeping in a car was actually a good night because the ground was cold and the shelters were crowded, smelly and scary. Stephanie’s last requirement was to find full-time employment. Brittani and her boyfriend are working on their credit score so they can buy a house. She dropped out of school in 10th grade and became a mom at age 16. Unfortunately these are common realities for a young woman growing up in poverty. However, not only did Vanessa grow up in generational poverty, she also grew up in an environment that did not trust the police force and actually hated police officers. Representation to address the broad range of civil legal issues encountered by survivors such as protection orders, child support, child custody, divorce, paternity, etc.
New Life House’s Domestic Violence Action Plan can help you develop strategies to stay safe while you’re still with your abuser and after you leave. If you’re looking to reduce your Missouri tax liability, you should consider making a donation to New Life House. Donations to New Life House of $100 or more qualify for the Missouri Domestic Violence Tax Credit Program. The tax credit may be the equivalent of 70% of the value of your qualified donation and you may qualify for federal tax deductions on the difference.
